The things people ask before they book

Answered here, so nobody has to ask when we arrive.

  • Will I get a far bigger bill at the end?

The price we agree before we start is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work. If we find more that needs doing, we explain it and price it first.

  • Will you leave a mess behind?

No. Every site is left cleaned, tidied and sanitised.

  • Who pays if something gets damaged?

We are insured, with up to £1 million public liability cover, so the risk sits with us and not with you.

Drain smells: questions we get asked

The questions callers ask us about smells, answered in a few lines.

Why does my drain smell like rotten eggs?

Usually because waste is sitting somewhere in the pipework and breaking down, or because a trap has dried out and lets gas up from the drain. Which one it is decides the fix, so we trace it on site and explain it before anything is done.

Why does my shower drain smell but it is not clogged?

A shower can drain freely and still smell if soap and hair have built up in the waste, or if the trap seal has dried out. Neither shows up as a blockage. We check the waste and the run behind it, and tell you what we find.

What is odour tracing?

It is how we find where a drain smell starts, rather than guessing. We ask where and when you notice it, trace it on site, and explain the cause before recommending what to do.

How much does it cost to sort a drain smell?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on what is causing the smell. Quotes are free, and for most jobs we can give you the price, or our labour rate, by phone before we set off. The price we agree before we start is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work.

Can you come out today for a smell in my house?

We aim to be with you within 60 minutes when you call. We would not put a time on the fix until we have seen the drain, and we will tell you what we find before any work begins.

What if my outside drain smells like sewage again after a clear?

We check the drain is running clear before we leave, and we tell you the cause so you know what to watch for. If the cause is a fault in the pipe, we say so plainly, and a camera survey or repair is recommended, priced and agreed with you first.

Where the smell starts

Drain smells do not always start where you notice them

A smell in the bathroom or kitchen does not always start there. It can come from a trap under the sink that has dried out, a floor gully, a waste pipe coated in soap or fat, or a fault in the drain outside, and each one is put right differently. That is what odour tracing is for: we ask where you notice it and when, then trace it on site instead of pouring cleaner down and hoping. Based in Ringwood, we work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. We explain the cause in plain terms, and you decide whether we fix it now or book it in. You pay for the work, not for us turning up.

Bathroom drain smells in Dorset, and what each smell points to

What you notice, what is often behind it, and what putting it right involves.

  • An empty white shower tray with the waste cover removed and lying beside the open plughole, glass screen and tiled walls

Shower or bathroom drain smells, but it is not blocked

What it actually isSoap and hair can coat the waste, and a trap that has dried out lets the smell up even when the water runs away normally.

What it needsOften a small job: we clear the waste and check the run behind it. If the smell returns, we tell you why and recommend the next step, agreed with you first.

  • A stainless steel kitchen sink with murky grey water standing in the bowl and food debris around the plughole

Kitchen sink drain smells bad, even after cleaning

What it actually isFat, grease and food waste cling to the pipe below the sink, and cleaning the plughole does not reach them.

What it needsWe clear the pipe and check it is running clear before we leave. If the build-up runs further along, we tell you and quote first.

  • A kitchen with a washing machine pulled out from the worktop, its grey drain hose running into a standpipe under the sink

Washing machine drain smells, worse when it runs

What it actually isResidue can build up in the waste pipe, and a poorly sealed connection can let the smell back into the room.

What it needsWe work out whether it is the machine waste or the drain beyond it, and explain what needs doing before we do it.

  • An outside gully at the foot of a grey downpipe with the grid lifted off, full of wet leaves and silt with dark water

    Outside drain smells like sewage

What it actually isA blocked gully, silt in the run or a damaged pipe underground can all send a smell up.

What it needsWe clear what is blocking it and check it runs clear. If we suspect damage, we recommend a camera survey and agree it with you first, so a smell is not assumed to mean a dig.

  • An old cream double-drainer kitchen sink with a washing-up bowl in it, mugs, a kettle and a toaster on the worktop, no water

A smell in the house, but no sign of a blockage

What it actually isA dried-out trap, a loose seal or a fault in the drain can let a smell into the house even when everything drains normally.

What it needsThis is where odour tracing earns its keep: we trace where it is coming from and explain what we find.

How drain smells get into a house, and how to stop them coming back

Most drain smells reach a house through a fixture that is meant to block them. Sinks, baths, showers and washing machines each have a trap or water seal, and when that seal dries out or is damaged, the smell from the pipework beyond it comes into the room. That is why a shower that is rarely used, or a spare bathroom, can produce drain smells in house rooms with nothing wrong in the main drain. It is also why a smell that comes and goes can be harder to pin down than one that never leaves.

Outside drain smells in Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire are a different problem. A gully clogged with leaves and silt, fat that has cooled and set in a run, or a crack that lets waste seep into the ground can each smell strongly. Which one it is decides whether a clear-out is enough or a repair is on the cards, and only tracing it tells you.

To stop drain smells coming back, you have to treat the cause, not the smell. Air fresheners and cleaner poured down the plughole can hide a smell for a while, but they do not remove what is producing it. We trace the source, explain it on site, and you decide whether we fix it now or book it in. If a smell turns out to need a camera survey or a repair, we recommend it, price it and agree it with you first, and nothing extra happens without your say-so.
