Priced before we start, never after

What a manhole needs depends on what is stopping it, so we give you the number on the phone rather than a guess on a page. We will not guess how long a clear takes before we have seen it, and we will tell you once we have. The price we agree before we start is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work.

Brilliant service from DC Drainage Solutions. We had a damaged and unsafe manhole cover that needed replacing, and they responded quickly and got the job sorted with no fuss. Everything was left clean and tidy afterwards. Really professional, reliable service and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

The things people ask before they book

Answered here, so nobody has to ask when we arrive.

  • Will I be charged just for you turning up?

No. You pay for the work, not for us arriving.

  • What if you find something worse and the bill jumps?

Nothing extra happens without your say-so. We tell you what we found and what it costs first, and you choose now or later.

  • Will you leave a mess round the manhole?

Every site is left cleaned, tidied and sanitised.

Blocked manholes: questions we get asked

The questions about the bill come first, because they usually are.

Do you charge a call-out fee for a blocked manhole?

No. There is no call-out fee, and quotes are free. You pay for the work, not for us turning up. Every charge, including waste disposal, parking and VAT, is stated clearly before any work starts.

Can I get a price before you come out to a blocked manhole?

For most jobs, yes. Call us and we will give you the price, or our labour rate, before we set off, so ask when you ring. The price we agree before we start is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work.

How long will it take to clear a blocked manhole?

We will not guess before we have seen it, and we will tell you once we have. What we can say is that we come out quickly and give you an arrival time when you call.

What if you find something else wrong with the drain?

We tell you what it is and what it costs first. Nothing extra happens without your say-so, and you can have it done now or booked in. If a camera survey would help, we recommend it and agree it with you before we do it.

Can you replace a damaged manhole cover?

Yes. Manhole and chamber repair, replacement and raising is part of what we do, and replacing damaged, unsafe covers is work we have done recently. Two customers mention it in their Google reviews: replaced quickly, and the site left clean.

Will you check the manhole is clear before you leave?

Yes. We check the drain is running clear before we leave, for example with drain dye, and the site is left cleaned, tidied and sanitised.

Money first, then the cause

Blocked manholes: the price first, then the cause

A blocked manhole usually shows itself as water standing in the chamber, a smell from the cover, or sinks and toilets that drain slowly at the same time. You will want the money answered first, so here it is: you will not be charged simply for us turning up, and for most jobs we give you a price, or our labour rate, before we set off. Then we diagnose it on site and explain what is behind it, in plain terms. Whether we clear it there and then or book the work in is your call. We are based in Ringwood and work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

What you can see, and what it usually means

What people ring us about, and what tends to be behind it.

  • An open rectangular brick inspection chamber in a tarmac drive part-filled with murky brown standing water, the cover lying

    Water standing in the manhole

What it actually isSomething further down the run is stopping the flow, such as fat, silt, debris or roots.

What it needsWe clear it and check the drain is running clear. We will not put a time on it before we have seen it.

  • A closed round cast-iron manhole cover in a tarmac side path beside a brick wall, with a black downpipe, a wheelie bin

A smell coming from the cover

What it actually isOften a build-up in the chamber or the pipes leading to it, and sometimes something further along the drain.

What it needsWe trace it on site. If a camera survey would help, we recommend it, price it and agree it with you first.

  • A white close-coupled toilet in a plain UK bathroom with dirty water risen high in the bowl and a plunger standing

Sinks and toilets draining slowly at once

What it actually isWhen several fixtures slow together, the blockage is often in the shared drain rather than in one pipe.

What it needsWe diagnose it on site and explain it. The clear is one job, and anything beyond it is your choice.

  • An old, worn and rusted cast-iron manhole cover sitting in a brick-edged recess in a garden path, before it was replaced

A cracked, sunken or loose cover

What it actually isA cover can be damaged by age, traffic or ground movement, and a damaged one can be unsafe.

What it needsWe replace it. Two of our recent Google reviews are for damaged covers replaced quickly and left clean.

Not sure which one yours is? Ring us and describe it. We will tell you what the job involves and, for most jobs, what it costs before we set off.

Clear it, survey it or repair it: which one you need

Every manhole job starts with the first column: finding the cause and clearing it. We suggest the others only when that is not enough, and we tell you before we do anything.

What happens after we open up a blocked manhole

A blocked manhole is often the front door to a bigger drainage question, and what we find in it decides what happens next. Sometimes the answer is a clear and nothing more. Sometimes the cause sits further along the drain, and a camera survey is worth having so you can see it for yourself. We recommend a survey only when it is needed, we tell you it is charged, and we agree it with you first. If the cover or the chamber itself is damaged, manhole and chamber repair, replacement and raising are part of what we do. Our engineers are EUSR-carded, we are members of the NADC, and we carry public liability cover of up to £1 million.

If you look after property for other people, the same call can lead somewhere more useful than a one-off clear. Landlords, letting agents, pubs, care homes and schools can ask us about planned drain maintenance and maintenance contracts, so problems are found on a schedule rather than when the water is already rising.

We are based in Ringwood and work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, from Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch to Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester. Ring us on 0800 246 5850, tell us what the manhole is doing, and ask for the price before we set off.
