Blocked toilets: questions we get asked

Phrased the way people ask them.

Is there a call-out fee for a blocked toilet?

No. You pay for the work, not for us turning up. Quotes are free too.

Can I get a price before you come out to a blocked toilet?

For most jobs, yes. Call us and we will give you the price, or our labour rate, before we set off, so ask when you ring. If we find something that needs more work, we tell you what it is and what it costs first.

Will the final bill match what you told me?

The price we agree before we start is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work. There are no hidden extras: every charge, including waste disposal, parking and VAT, is stated clearly up front, before any work starts.

How quickly can you get to a blocked toilet?

We aim to be with you within 60 minutes, and we'll give you an arrival time when you call. How long the clear itself takes depends on what is causing the blockage, and we won't put a time on it until we have seen it.

Do I need a CCTV survey for a blocked toilet?

Not automatically. We start with the unblock and only recommend a survey where the cause isn't clear or the toilet keeps blocking. It is recommended, priced and agreed with you first, so you decide.

What if my toilet keeps blocking after it has been cleared?

There is no drain we can't clear, but we would rather find out why than keep clearing it. A camera survey shows what is going on inside the drain, and we explain the options and the cost before anything is done.

The price first, then the cause

Blocked toilets: what we find, and what you decide

With a blocked toilet, the first worry is usually the bill, then whether anyone can come today. So the money comes first: there is nothing to pay just for us attending, and for most jobs we can give you the price, or our labour rate, before we set off. Once we are with you we diagnose the cause on site, explain it, and you decide whether we fix it now or book it in. A blockage in the toilet's own pipe is a different job from one further along the drain, and we will tell you which yours is before suggesting anything more. We are based in Ringwood and work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

What your toilet is doing, and what it usually means

The symptoms people ring about, and what we do about each.

  • A toilet bowl filled almost to the rim with murky brown water, a damp towel on the floor beside it

The toilet won't flush and the water is rising

What it actually isUsually a blockage in the toilet's own pipe, or in the first stretch of drain beyond it.

What it needsWe clear it on site and check the drain is running clear. For most jobs you hear the price before we start, and we won't guess a time until we have seen it.

  • A white close-coupled toilet in a dated bathroom with the water at a normal level and a rubber plunger standing on the floor

The toilet flushes slowly and gurgles

What it actually isA partial blockage building up, sometimes further along the drain than the toilet itself.

What it needsWe diagnose on site to see where it sits. If the cause isn't clear, we may recommend a camera survey, priced and agreed with you first.

  • A white close-coupled toilet with the water at normal level in a small bathroom, a plunger standing on the floor beside it

The toilet keeps blocking again after being cleared

What it actually isSomething in the drain keeping the problem coming back, such as roots, hardened scale or a fault in the pipe.

What it needsA camera survey shows the cause instead of guessing at it. We recommend it, price it and agree it with you first, and you choose whether it happens now or later.

  • An outside gully at the foot of a grey downpipe beside a back door, grid lifted off and lying beside it, the gully full

Water backing up elsewhere, or a smell around the drains

What it actually isThe blockage may be past the toilet, in the drain or manhole it feeds.

What it needsWe find where it sits and explain it before suggesting anything more. You decide whether we fix it now or book it in.

Not sure which yours is? Ring us and tell us what the toilet is doing. We get as much information as we can over the phone.

Unblocking or a CCTV drain survey: which does your toilet need?

We start with the unblock and only recommend a survey when the cause isn't clear or the blockage keeps coming back, because clearing it again would only treat the symptom. Either way, you agree it first.

How we deal with a blocked toilet, and what you get

We aim to get as much information as we can over the phone, but we prefer to diagnose and talk it through on site. We recommend what work needs to take place, and whether that means doing it straight away or booking it in, we work however you like. We also won't put a time on how long a clear will take before we have seen it. We will tell you once we have.

Once the blockage is cleared, we check the drain is running clear before we leave, using methods like drain dye. Where the cause still isn't clear, or the toilet keeps blocking, we may recommend a CCTV survey. That is a charged extra, so it is always recommended, priced and agreed with you first, and you can say no.

We are based in Ringwood and work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, from Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch to Southampton and Eastleigh. Our engineers are EUSR-carded, and we are members of the NADC (National Association of Drainage Contractors). With twenty years' experience between the two of them, they expect every job to be reliable, punctual and professional, and every site to be left cleaned, tidied and sanitised.
