Drain Descaling Questions, Answered

Phrased the way people ask them.

How much does drain descaling cost?

It depends on what is stuck in the pipe and how much of it. For most jobs, ring us and we will give you the price, or our labour rate, before we set off. Quotes are free, and the price we agree before we start is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work.

Is there a call-out fee for drain descaling?

No. You pay for the work, not for us turning up. Every charge is stated clearly up front, before any work starts.

What does a drain descaling machine do?

It removes hardened deposits from inside the pipe, such as scale, concrete and set fat, rather than washing away loose debris. We use the right method for the drain, which is why we diagnose on site first.

Is drain descaling the same as drain jetting?

No. Descaling is the harder end of the work: it deals with concrete, scale and hardened fat, while standard jetting suits loose debris, silt and grease. We diagnose on site and tell you which your drain needs, even when that means the simpler job.

Can you do fat removal from a drain?

Yes. Fat removal, including fat that has hardened, is part of what we do. We find the cause on site, explain it, and you decide whether we clear it now or book it in.

How long does drain descaling take?

We will not guess before we have seen the drain. Once we have diagnosed it on site, we tell you.

When a normal clear is not enough

Drain Descaling for Concrete, Scale and Hardened Fat

For most jobs we can tell you the price, or our labour rate, before we set off. The price we agree is the price you pay, unless you approve extra work. That is the money side of drain descaling. The other side is why you need it: if your drain keeps slowing or backing up after it has been cleared, the cause may not be loose debris. Concrete, scale or hardened fat stuck to the pipe wall calls for descaling, not another quick jet. We find the cause on site and explain it, and you decide whether we descale now or book it in. Based in Ringwood, we work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

  • Concrete, scale and hardened fat, not just loose debris
  • Your call: descale it now, or book it in
  • A camera survey only where needed, priced and agreed first

What You Can See, and What It Can Mean

We diagnose before we quote, so you are not sold more than the drain needs.

  • An engineer in black workwear kneeling at an open chamber in a concrete side path, feeding a black cable or hose down into it

The drain blocks again soon after it has been cleared

What it actually isSomething hard may be stuck to the pipe wall, such as scale, set concrete or hardened fat, which a standard clear can leave behind.

What it needsDescaling, once we have diagnosed it on site.

  • An engineer kneeling at an open brick chamber in a tarmac road, feeding a black cable or hose down into it from a drum reel

Water drains slowly, but only from one fitting

What it actually isOften a local build-up of grease near that waste, rather than a problem in the main drain.

What it needsUsually a clear of that run rather than a descale. We say so if that is all it needs.

  • An open square brick chamber in a tarmac drive, cover lifted off beside it, holding murky brown standing water, nobody

Water is slow to leave a manhole or chamber

What it actually isA narrowed pipe downstream, which hardened deposits can cause.

What it needsWe diagnose it on site first, and recommend a camera survey only if we think it is needed.

  • An open rectangular brick inspection chamber in disturbed soil beside a house wall, orange pipes at its base and a rusted

Concrete has gone down the drain after building work

What it actually isConcrete washed into a drain can set inside the pipe.

What it needsDescaling to remove it, priced and agreed with you before we start.

Descaling or Standard Jetting? The Honest Difference

If the blockage is loose debris or light grease, standard jetting is the right call and descaling is not worth paying for. Descaling earns its place when the build-up has gone hard.

More About Drain Pipe Descaling and Fat Removal

Drain pipe descaling deals with the deposits that an ordinary clear leaves behind. Scale can build up on the pipe wall over time, fat that has gone down the drain can set hard, and concrete washed into a drain can cure in place. Each one narrows the pipe, which is why a drain can seem to clear and then slow down again within weeks.

A drain descaling machine works from inside the pipe, removing the hardened layer rather than washing away loose debris. Which method suits depends on the drain, so we diagnose on site before we recommend anything. We use a 3,000 psi jetter for high-pressure work, and we say plainly when a standard jet is all a drain needs.

Fat removal is part of what we do for homes and, through maintenance contracts, for places such as pubs, care homes, schools and letting agents. Where fat has set hard, descaling is the right tool. Where it is still soft, a standard jet will often do the job. We are members of the NADC (National Association of Drainage Contractors).

Based in Ringwood, we work across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, from Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch to Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester. Ring first, and for most jobs we give you the price or our labour rate before we set off.
